SAFF Media stands for Submerged Aerobic Fixed Film media – a type of structured biological filter media used primarily in wastewater and sewage treatment systems.

What is SAFF Media?
SAFF stands for:
- Submerged – The media is fully submerged in wastewater.
- Aerobic – Oxygen is supplied to promote the growth of aerobic bacteria.
- Fixed Film – Microorganisms grow as a biofilm on the surface of the media, rather than floating in the water.
These media are often made of PVC or polypropylene and come in structured, corrugated blocks that provide a large surface area for microbial growth.
How does it work?
SAFF Media consists of corrugated UV-stabilized PVC (or PP) sheets arranged in a submerged fixed-film reactor. These sheets provide a large surface area for beneficial biofilm (aerobic bacteria) to grow. As wastewater flows through the media:
- Primary settlement removes large solids.
- Secondary treatment occurs where microorganisms attached to the media degrade organic pollutants (BOD, Suspended Solids).
- Final clarification separates and settles remaining solids before discharge or reuse
Treatment process:
- Wastewater enters the SAFF reactor.
- Aeration diffusers at the bottom supply oxygen to support aerobic bacteria.
- Microorganisms attach to the surface of the media and form a biofilm.
- As water passes through, bacteria consume organic pollutants (BOD/COD).
- Cleaned water moves to the next treatment stage.

SAFF Media is a proven, efficient, compact, and low-maintenance biological filtration media used in wastewater treatment. It’s especially suited for environments where simplicity, efficiency, and limited land are key factors. Whether for new installations or retrofits, it’s a compelling solution in residential, commercial, and light industrial settings.
Advantages of SAFF Media:
- High BOD/COD removal efficiency (up to 95–98%)
- Compact and space-saving design
- Low energy consumption
- Minimal sludge production
- Simple to operate and maintain
- Long-lasting material
Applications of SAFF Media:
- Sewage treatment plants (STPs)
- Effluent treatment plants (ETPs)
- Residential complexes and commercial buildings
- Small-scale industrial wastewater treatment
